Pets as gifts sounds like an awfully good idea.. actually it is an awful idea most of the time. The giver of the gitt may think that the person, especially a child, will love the new “furbaby” and initially this may be so. But a pet is at least a 10 yr commitment, with a lot of expense to the owner. Can the person receiving the pet afford this expense? Then when the first flush of excitement is over the pet can become a burden, having to feed and clean up. If the pet damages furniture or makes messes while then finding the pet a home becomes an option. Rescue societies have their largest intake after Christmas when the new pet is treated like a broken toy and thrown away. Please think before giving a pet for Christmas.
